Lecturer Interview: How are Data Analysts Using AI in the Workplace?

Gautam Soni, Data Analytics Lecturer at Business Technology Academy and Decision Science Manager at LinkedIn, recently spoke to us about how AI is being used in the workplace. Gautam discussed how AI is reshaping—but not replacing—the work of data analysts. In the interview, he emphasised that AI is enhancing analysts’ capabilities, enabling them to work more efficiently and strategically, while fundamental analytical skills remain as essential as ever. You can read the full interview below:

What is your background in Data Analytics?

I’ve worked in data analytics for over 12 years, most recently as a Decision Science Manager at LinkedIn. I’ve led analytics projects for global teams, built dashboards, created predictive models, and supported business leaders with data-driven decisions.

What made you interested in a career in Data Analytics?

I’ve always enjoyed solving problems and making sense of messy information. Early in my career, I realised that data could explain why things were happening and help people make better decisions. That mix of logic, curiosity, and impact is what drew me in, and still keeps me excited about the work.

How are Data Analysts using AI in the workplace?

AI helps analysts work faster. We use it to clean data, automate routine tasks, explore patterns, and even draft code or summaries. But the analyst is still the one who understands the business, checks the accuracy, and turns those insights into actions. AI is a tool – not the decision-maker.

Are SQL, Tableau, and Python still needed to be a Data Analyst?

Yes, 100%. These are the foundation of the job. AI can help, but you still need to know how to write SQL, analyse data in Python, and communicate results through tools like Tableau or Power BI. Think of AI as a helpful assistant – you still need the core skills.

Will AI replace or assist Data Analysts?

AI will assist. It will take over repetitive work, but it can’t replace human judgment, business understanding, or storytelling. Analysts who know how to use AI will simply get more done and provide deeper insights.

Why should someone consider a career in Data Analytics?

It’s a great career because it’s in demand, well-paid, and useful across every industry. If you enjoy problem-solving, working with real business questions, and seeing your work make an impact, analytics is a fantastic choice. Plus, with AI growing, it’s an exciting time to enter the field – not a risky one.
